You call two fabricators for the same main gate. One says ₹95 per kg. The other says ₹130 per kg. Both numbers sound reasonable, but neither tells you what you will actually pay, because nobody has said how many kilos your gate will weigh or what the rate includes.
In this guide, Techno Gates explains the gate price per kg in plain words: what the rate covers, what a normal range looks like in India, how to work out your own gate's cost, and how to compare two quotes without getting confused.
The Quick Answer
- The gate price per kg is the fabricator's rate for steel plus cutting, welding, finishing and basic labour. It is not the price of raw steel.
- Market listings in 2026 show roughly ₹90 to ₹150 per kg for a simple mild steel (MS) gate, and more for designer or laser-cut work.
- Your final cost is weight x rate, plus extras such as paint, hardware, installation and automation.
- A low rate on a heavy gate can cost more than a higher rate on a lighter, well-designed gate. Always ask for the estimated weight.
What Does Gate Price Per Kg Mean?
Many gate makers in India quote MS and iron gates by weight. The fabricator estimates how many kilos of steel your gate will need, multiplies that by a per kg rate, and gives you a total. It is an old and simple way of quoting, and it works well when both sides are honest about the weight.
The rate is not the same as the market price of steel. Mild steel itself sells at roughly ₹50 to ₹68 per kg depending on the product (TMT bars, HR coils and sections all differ). The gate rate is higher because it pays for the work that turns raw pipes and sheets into a finished gate.
Typical Gate Price Per Kg in India
These are indicative ranges based on listings and quotes seen across Indian markets in 2026. Your city, the design and the finish will change them, so treat them as a planning guide and not as a quote.
| Type of gate | Indicative rate | What it usually means |
|---|---|---|
| Simple MS or iron gate | ₹90 to ₹120 per kg | Plain pipe or flat design, basic primer and paint |
| Standard home main gate | ₹110 to ₹150 per kg | Better sections, neat welding, some design work |
| Designer, laser-cut or antique gate | ₹150 to ₹300 per kg | Cut patterns, extra grinding and detailed finishing |
| Sliding gate built for automation | Often quoted per sq ft or as a package | Needs a frame, track and fittings made for a motor |
Stainless steel and aluminium gates are usually quoted per square foot, not per kg, because the material, finish and fittings work differently. If you are still choosing a material, read our guide on MS vs SS vs aluminium gates before you ask for rates.
Why the Gate Rate Is Higher Than the Steel Rate
If steel costs ₹55 per kg, why does a fabricator ask ₹110? Because a good part of the rate pays for things you do not see in the final gate.
- Cutting and shaping the pipes, flats and sheets
- Welding, then grinding the welds smooth
- Wastage, since offcuts do not become part of your gate
- Primer and paint, which can be one coat or three
- Labour, workshop rent, power and tools
- Transport to your site
You can see the whole process in our article on how a gate is fabricated, from measurement to installation. Once you know how many steps there are, a rate above the raw steel price makes sense.
How to Estimate Your Gate Cost
The formula is simple:
Gate cost = estimated weight (kg) x rate per kg + extras
Here is a made-up example to show how it works. It is not a Techno Gates quote.
- Estimated weight of the gate: 120 kg
- Rate: ₹110 per kg
- Gate cost: 120 x 110 = ₹13,200
- Extras: hinges, lock, wheels, paint upgrade and installation are added on top if they are not already in the rate
Now look at the problem. If another fabricator builds the same size gate from thicker pipe and it weighs 160 kg, even a lower rate of ₹100 gives 160 x 100 = ₹16,000. The second gate is more expensive, and it is not necessarily stronger or better made.
This is why the weight matters as much as the rate. A fair quote tells you which sections will be used (for example, 40 mm x 40 mm square pipe with 2 mm wall thickness) so that the weight can be checked.
What Pushes the Price Per Kg Up or Down
Two gates with the same weight can still have different rates. These are the usual reasons.
- Design: a plain frame is quick to make. Jali work, laser cutting and curved shapes take far more time
- Finish: powder coating or a good enamel system costs more than a single coat of paint, and it lasts longer
- Section quality: branded or ISI-marked pipe costs more than thin local pipe
- Gate size and type: a big sliding or cantilever gate needs a heavier frame and stronger hardware
- Site conditions: a gate that must be carried up stairs or fitted on a difficult wall takes more labour
- Steel market: steel prices move through the year, so the same gate can cost a little more or less from month to month
Per Kg or Per Sq Ft: Which Is Better?
Neither is better on its own. It depends on how honest and clear the quote is.
Per kg pricing is fair when you can see the section sizes and check the weight. The risk is a heavier gate than you needed, since more steel means a higher bill.
Per sq ft pricing gives you a fixed cost for a given size, no matter what the weight turns out to be. The risk is a thin gate, because the fabricator may save money on the steel to protect his margin.
Whichever method you choose, ask for the material, thickness, finish and fittings in writing. That is the only way to compare two offers properly.
If you plan to automate the gate later, tell the fabricator now. A gate that will carry a motor needs a stronger frame and the right weight, and we explain the cost side in our automatic gate cost guide.
Does GST or Transport Change the Price?
Yes, and many people only find out at the end. Some fabricators quote a rate that already includes GST, and some add it later. Transport and crane charges for a big gate can also be separate.
Ask this one question early: "Is this the final amount I will pay, with everything included?" If the answer is no, ask what will be added. A clean quote states GST, transport, fixing and any civil work in one place, so there are no surprises on delivery day.
Five Mistakes to Avoid
- Comparing only the rate. ₹95 per kg on 170 kg costs more than ₹120 per kg on 110 kg
- Not asking for the estimated weight. Without it, the rate means nothing
- Ignoring the paint system. A cheap coat of paint will peel, and the gate will start rusting within a couple of monsoons
- Forgetting the extras. Hinges, locks, wheels, fixing and installation may be charged separately
- Skipping the site visit. Gates made on guessed measurements rarely fit well, and a bad fit costs money to fix
Questions to Ask Before You Accept a Quote
- What is the estimated weight of the finished gate?
- Which pipe, flat or sheet sizes will be used, and what is the wall thickness?
- Does the rate include primer, paint, hinges, lock and installation?
- Is the gate being made for automation, now or later?
- How long will it take, and what is the warranty or after-sales support?
